Abstract
The year 1959-1960 was World Refugee Year, an international effort to raise awareness of and support for the nearly 2.5 million refugees across the globe. Although no Jewish refugees remained in 1959, Israel having devoted considerable effort to take in any Jew in need, Jews in America were urged to join forces with Christians from around the world in order to help alleviate this crisis. This international effort sought to provide basic necessities such as food, fireproof housing, education, and startup loans, and though no single year could ever solve such a massive problem, the effort was successful in putting refugees on the radar of the political conscience of several countries.
